Ryan
reporting in live 9/20/2004 for the the SummitClimb team.
September 20 Dispatch -
Hello, this is Ryan Waters calling from Cho Oyu Advanced Base Camp, for the
Summit Climb team. Alot of us are resting here at ABC today, enjoying the
beautiful sounds of Celine Dion and Lionel Ritchie, coming from the Chinese
tent next to us, and drinking coffee and relaxing today. People at ABC today
are Mon, Neil, Dan, Ron, Paul, and Maya Sherpa as well as Arnold and myself.
We were up spending the night at Camp 1 last night - I'm sorry, the night
before - and we climbed above Camp 1 to the icefall, just for a little
acclimatization, and then we came all the way back down to ABC yesterday
afternoon. Still up at Camp 1 are Jacques and Caroline, they spent their
second night at Camp 1 last night. Also joining them at Camp 1 last night were
Roland and Pete. And today, Roland, Pete, and Jacques plan on climbing a bit
above Camp 1 to explore the route to Camp 2.
There is a chance they might
spend the night there again tonight, or come back to ABC to rest today. Most
of us are starting to get onto a schedule now, and after a couple more days of
rest we will be able to formulate some summit attempt plans. A large number of
us are planning on one more day of rest here at ABC tomorrow, the 21st, then
climbing to Camp 1, to Camp 2, and even above that, possibly to Camp 3 for
acclimatization, before returning to ABC for a few days of rest, before a
summit attempt. Right now, there's a fall storm on Cho Oyu, and it's been
snowing since last night, although things are relatively calm here. Most
people are relaxing at ABC, or probably sleeping in their tents up at Camp 1
and Camp 2. There are alot of teams high on the mountain going for their
summit attempts. In the coming days, the teams will have been here for a
little while though. We'll hope to hear some good news from them. We will call
you back with more news, but for now, we hope everyone is doing well, and we
thank you for your support. We'll talk to you later, goodbye.
