Hillary Everest Marathon

The
Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, highest marathon in the world was run on May
29th 2004. It was organised to commemorate the 51st anniversary of ascent on
Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary. The marathon
organized by Himalaya Expeditions, promoted by Nepal Tourism and supported by
Nepal Mountaineering Association started at Mt Everest base camp and ended at
Namche Bazar (3446m), a total distance of 42.195km. Mr. Dangima Sherpa of
Nepal won the event in a time of four hours three minutes and eight seconds.
Out of 86 participants, only 71 could make it finishing line. There were
foreign entries from UK, USA, Canada and India. Out of six women participants,
one was from Canada who completed it in 11 hrs. 11 min. 46 sec. Mr. Akkal
Bahadur Bohara of Nepalese Armed Police who finished second completed it in 4
hrs, 06 min. Mr. Man Bahadur Moktan of Royal Nepal Army made it in 4 hrs, 26
min, 34 sec coming third in the marathon. In the women's category, 17 yrs old
Ms. Yandi Sherpa came first completing the 42.195 kilometre course in 5 hrs.
55 min. 40 sec. Ms. Mingma Doma Sherpa finished second completing it in 6 hrs.
09 min.50sec. Ms. Phura Yangjee Sherpa completed the same distance in 6 hrs.
47 min. 32 sec. and came third. The Chief Guest of the programme was H.E
Rudiger Lemp, the German Ambassador to Nepal who distributed cash awards and
medals to winners. Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa, President, Nepal Mountaineering
Association and Mr. Bikrum Pandey, President, Himalaya Expeditions, the
organisers, also distributed cash awards, certificates and medals to winners.
Nepal Tourism Board was represented by Mr. Aditya Baral, Manager- TM & P PR &
Publicity and Mr. Sarad Pradhan- Media Consultant. More than a dozen of
journalists including Mr. Charles Pertwee from Action Asia- Hong Kong attended
this event for media coverage.
