 K2 climber receives Men's Journal 2004 anti-terror award | ||||||

| K2 climber Greg Mortenson, founder and director of Montana-based Central Asia Institute (CAI), has received a Men's Journal "Anti-Terror Award" and is profiled in the October issue. Mortenson, 46, has established dozens of schools in remote villages of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan that began after a 1993 climb on K2's west ridge, with fellow AAC members Dan Mazur and Scott Darsney. Other award recipients profiled by the magazine include U.S. Army Gen. Tommy Franks, the passengers of Flight 93, the 9/11 widows, U.S. Navy SEAL William McRaven, Marine Corps Col. David Karcher and Pat Tillman, who was killed in Afghanistan after forgoing a professional football career to join the U.S. Army. Mortenson's nomination came from Colorado congressman and climber Mark Udall, who is quoted in the Men's Journal article, "this is how we will win hearts and minds...and how we have to win the war on terror." Mortenson is married to Tara Bishop, sister of twice Everest summitter Brent Bishop and daughter of the late Barry Bishop, the photographer on the 1963 American Everest expedition. Mortenson, who has travelled to Pakistan and Afghanistan 28 times encompassing over 60 months since 1993, is currently on a seven-week trip to visit CAI schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
