There as been another major bomb blast in
Jakarta Indonesia. Carstensz Pyramid expeditions were
stopped a few years ago because of people getting killed in the area.
ADVENTURE INDONESIA, which is the company that almost everyone used to run
Carstensz expeditions, could no longer get permits.
A former employee of ADVENTURE INDONESIA, then ran at least 2 unpermitted
expeditions around Freeport Mine, both of which resulted in climbers with guns
pointed at them. Climbers having to pay more money for their safety and
pressure on the climbers not to talk, after having paid for their safety.
Lucky, climbers have spoken out. Rumors, seem to appear that those speaking
out got the the legal permits stopped; this is just stupid and false. Check
the facts, the legal permits stopped before the climbers reports.
Freeport Mine STATEMENT: "PT Freeport Indonesia
(PT-FI), a contractor to the government of Indonesia working under a mining
Contract of Work, is not allowed to grant visitors access through its project
area to the Carstenz/Meren glaciers or the Puncak Jaya Peak (Mt. Carstenz). PT-FI
is in no way affiliated with these organizations and cannot, due to legal and
safety reasons, offer logistical assistance or access to any organization
through its project area."
Below is part of one of our letters from
ADVENTURE INDONESIA
Thank you very much for your
email and truly contacting us. We do much pleasure to support your expedition
climb Carstenz Pyramid as one of seven summit in the world.
Unfortunately, due to the
current situation in West Irian, both government and military boards are
still not allowing any outsiders to getting into the regions. Therefore
there is no permit approved at all. We do not know for how long this
situation will be. We our selves have some pending groups for the future
climb. There is no schedule to set up at the moment.
As you notice since political situation in Papua happen really sensitive,
our government more strictly to submit the visitor permission.
For your information, since Carstensz was re-opened in 1997 we have been
running the expedition many times. All of the expeditions operate directly by
us (NOT by third party) through our own Operational Branch Office in Jayapura.
By operating directly the expedition, we sure we could control directly the
safety and quality of each expedition.
Thank you so much for your kind attention and we do appreciate for your
understanding due the permission in Irian Jaya.
Kind Regards, Budhiprayoga (yoga) Operational Dept

We suggest anyone even considering going to
Carstensz to read the article in the Washington Post, "I Went to Indonesia, And
Ran Into a Mountain of Trouble" By Francis Slakey posted Sunday, December 7,
2003; Page B05. This articles ran in all the major news wires around the world.
The articles is hard to find on the Washington post online, however can be found
in archives.
