Although
they do not normally garner the glory of the climbers who
reach the summit of Everest, there are many men who work
in the background supporting climbers and making
expeditions possible. Such it is with Transport
Officers, those men charged with overseeing the movement
of porters and the vital supplies they carry.
Edward Oswald Shebbeare was the
Transport Officer on the Third British expedition in 1924 and again in 1933
(where he was also appointed Deputy Leader). Like expedition member Captain
John Noel, Shebbeare was not a climber by profession. Nevertheless he was able
to reach the North Col. in 1933, at the age of 50. He could also speak to the
Sherpa in their native language.
Shebbeare had a long career
in the Indian Forestry Department and served as the Chief Game Warden in
Malaysia beginning in
1938.
During World War II he
was captured and held as a POW by the Japanese in Singapore from 1942 until
his release in 1945. He was a well-regarded author and published several books
on natural history.
