News April 14th 04: Hi, Yesterday, Tuesday April 13th  we have left Nyalam to go to Tingri (4300 m), approximately 4 hours walking from Nyalam. The road was beautiful, completely empty not even a tree it is incredible to cross these Tibetans villages, rather many, and to see people living under these conditions. To heat, Tibetans, as they do not have a tree and thus not wood, collect dungs of yaks they make them dry and then burn them... 

Here there is no wasting, all is used twice, consumed, and so on! It is very hard to see these children living in these conditions, I would like so much to be able to help this population when I come here and our roads crossed. 

To go to Tingri, we have passed the collar Lalung at 5.050 meters. We stopped a few minutes in order to admire this panorama arid and desert from where emerges the high Himalayan tops, one of which is the Shishapangma which culminates at 8036 meters. For information, Jean-Christophe has climbed it twice in October 1994 by opening a new way alone. This afternoon our luggage and staff are finally arrive at Tingri… ouf…a large concern in less! From Tingri, we see the northern slope of the Everest and a while before arriving to Tingri the Cho-Oyu.

As per the weather forecast, not very good news, sand storms at our arrival yesterday, today the sky is covered and like always after midday, the wind is here and blows high by raising the sand which wraps Tingri in a cloud of dust.  The news from Kathmandu are getting worst. I have an e-mail from the agency in Nepal which assure me that the conflicts are multiplying  in the streets of Kathmandu with violent confrontations between Police and Maoists. My decision is taken, I am organising my repatriation to  Kathmandu because the situation is really too critical.

Maoists are using the tourist season as pressure against the Government in order to be listened.

As the situation is still the same, Maoists cross a step by aiming at the tourist. At this time my return to Kathmandu poses security problems because once at the border of Tibet and once on the Nepalese territory the situation becomes dangerous. The agency does not know how and what to do, she asks me to call them once in Zangmu (small sordid Tibetan/Chinese city at 20 minutes from the border) and according to the situation decide if I pass or not the border. I think that I will choose, if possible, another alternative which will be to return to Lhassa (capital of Tibet) by jeep and once at Lhassa to take a plane to Kathmandu which may be full, because there is only one flight per week. The current political situation arranges nothing. I have also to check the booking flights for my return because I am more in security while waiting in Tibet than in Nepal, it isn’t simple to organize this at the bottom of Tibet with often bad telephonic communications with Nepal…

For the timing “expedition” of the following days, we leave tomorrow on April 15th  to Karta, which is at approximately 6 hours of jeep. April 16th , the day will be dedicated to the Yacks organisation and the distribution of the luggage on these animals. The 17th , Jean-Christophe will leave to take his way direction to his base camp of Makalu. He plans to be there between the 20th  and 21st April.

I will leave by my way on April 17th , I do not know where… The “alone adventure” of Jean Christophe will start with his departure to the base camp, with no company from there! Translations by Fabienne for EverestNews.com

Bonjour, Hier mardi 13 avril nous avons quitté Nyalam pour nous rendre à Tingri  (4300 mètres) d’altitude à environ 4 heures de route de Nyalam.

La route était très belle, complètement désertique… pas un arbre… c’est incroyable de traverser ces villages Tibétains, assez nombreux, et de voir les gens vivrent dans ces conditions si précaires.

Pour se chauffer, les Tibétains , n’ayant pas un arbre et donc pas de bois , ramassent des bouses de yacks qu’ils font sécher pour ensuite les faire brûler.

Ici il n’y a pas de gaspillage, tout est réutilisé, consommé, etc…

C’est très dur de voir ces enfants vivre dans cette précarité, j’aimerais tellement pouvoir aider cette population lorsque je vais à sa rencontre et que nos routes se croisent… 

Pour nous rendre à Tingri, nous avons passé le col Lalung La à 5050 mètres d’altitude. Cet après-midi nos bagages et le staff sont enfin arrivés à Tingri… ouf… un gros soucis en moins !

De Tingri, nous apercevons le versant nord de l’Everest et un peu avant d’arriver à Tingri le Cho-Oyu.

Côté météo, c’est vraiment pas terrible, tempête de sable à notre arrivée hier, aujourd’hui le ciel est couvert et comme toujours les après-midi, le vent se lève et souffle tempêtueusement  en soulevant le sable qui enveloppe Tingri dans un nuage de poussière… 

Les nouvelles de Katmandou sont de pires en pires. J’ai eu un e-mail de l’agence du Népal qui me confirme que les conflits se multiplient dans les rues de Katmandou avec des affrontements violents entre Police et Maoïstes…ma décision est prise, je suis en train d’organiser mon rapatriement sur Katmandou car la situation est vraiment trop critique.

Les Maoïstes se servent de la saison touristique comme moyen de pression auprès du gouvernement pour se faire entendre.

La situation n’ayant pas évolué, les Maoïstes franchissent un pas au dessus en visant le touriste.

A l’heure actuelle mon retour sur Katmandou pose des problèmes de sécurité car arrivée à la frontière du Tibet et une fois passée sur le territoire Népalais la situation devient périlleuse. L’agence ne sait pas trop comment faire… elle me demande de lui téléphoner lorsque je suis à Zangmu (petite ville Tibéto/Chinoise sordide à 20 minutes de la frontière) et en fonction de l’ambiance décider si je passe ou pas la frontière …

Je pense que je vais opter, si c’est possible, pour une autre alternative qui sera de me rendre en jeep à Lhassa (capitale du Tibet) et de Lhassa prendre un avion pour Katmandou qui risque d’être complet, car il y a un seul vol par semaine. La situation politique actuelle n’arrange rien.

Il faut aussi vérifier le booking des vols pour mon retour car je suis plus en sécurité en attendant au Tibet qu’au Népal… c’est pas simple à organiser au fin fond du Tibet avec des communications téléphoniques souvent mauvaises avec le Népal…

Pour le timing « expédition » des jours suivants, nous partons demain le 15 avril pour Karta, qui se trouve à environ 6 heures de jeep.

Le 16 avril, la journée sera consacrée à l’organisation des Yacks et la répartition des bagages sur ces bêtes.

Le 17, Jean-Christophe s’en ira pour entreprendre son chemin en direction de son camp de base du Makalu.

Il pense l’atteindre entre le 20 et le 21 avril.

Moi, je pars le 17 de mon côté, je ne sais ou…

L’aventure solitaire de Jean-Christophe va commencer dès son départ pour le camp de base ne  l’accompagnant pas au-delà !

Comme je fais beaucoup de communiqués en ce moment je n’ai pas organisé une interview avec Jean-Christophe.

J’en ferais une avant notre séparation le 17 avril.
