Dispatch Two: Hello, after a departure that is as wrenching as ever, whenever I leave my children on this type of a trip to carry out my photo and video journalism, we arrived in Nepal, or specifically Katmandu.

After quite a bit of hassle finding a flight departing from either Geneva or Lyon via Katmandu, we were finally able to fly with an airline company MARTINAIR that has direct flights between Amsterdam/Katmandu, which kindly offered us our airline tickets.  We are very grateful to them because the situation was very difficult to find available flights at a reasonable fare... the service was impeccable and the flight was also.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank KLM airline, with whom we traveled and also worked with for our flights from Geneva via Amsterdam, which as usual were very good. 

But, to get back to Katmandu, the general atmosphere is tense… the civil war in the country presents problems at different levels, particularly that of security whenever you move about.  The army is everywhere in Katmandu.

There is also another problem that makes us revise all of our plans... the strike... as in France... it began on April 6 in Katmandu, it ends on April 8, and on April 9, they go on strike outside of Katmandu… thus we are stuck in Katmandu until April 11… which is really not great. 

We found an intermediate solution, that will cost us even more money, of being transported to the frontier with Tibet by helicopter.

We depart from Katmandu on the morning of the 10th.  We are hoping to be able to do our shopping for food and various other supplies, because with the strike most of the businesses are closed. 

We await the staff and the luggage for three days in Nyalam, which is located at 12,350 feet altitude and will allow us to begin our acclimation.

In theory, we should reach base camp on the 19th or 20th of April, and I am going to leave on the 23rd in order to be in Katmandu to catch my plane on April 28th... 

Weather wise, it's hot but not too bad, summer has begun and so have the storms.

We were in a hurry to leave Katmandu to begin our trip to the base camp of Makalu and discover this wild region of Tibet.  This Thursday, April 8, we are going to meet the staff of our expedition at the agency and settle the last preparations.

On April 9, we will close up our luggage for this long trip.

Bonjour, Après un départ toujours aussi déchirant lorsque je quitte mes enfants sur ce type de voyage afin de réaliser mes reportages photo et vidéo nous sommes bien arrivés au Népal, à Katmandou précisément.

Après pas mal de galères pour trouver des places disponibles pour un vol au départ de Genève ou Lyon via Katmandou nous avons finalement pu voler avec la compagnie MARTINAIR qui a des vols directs Amsterdam/Katmandou et qui nous a offerts gracieusement nos billets d’avions. Nous leur en sommes très reconnaissant car la situation était délicate pour trouver des vols disponibles à un tarif raisonnable… le service a été impeccable et le vol très bien également. Nous en profitons également pour remercier la compagnie KLM avec laquelle nous voyageons et collaborons également pour les vols de Genève via Amsterdam qui comme toujours sont très bien.

Pour en revenir à Katmandou, l’ambiance générale est tendue…la guerre civile dans le Pays pose des problèmes à différents niveaux dont celui de l’insécurité lorsque l’on se déplace, l’armée est omniprésente dans Katmandou.

Il y a encore un autre problème qui nous fait revoir toute notre organisation… La Grève… comme en France… elle a commencé le 6 avril dans Katmandou, elle s’arrête le 8 avril et le 9 avril c’est la grève en dehors de Katmandou…donc nous sommes coincés à Katmandou jusqu’au 11 avril….c’est vraiment pas génial.

J’avais déjà pas beaucoup de temps sans la grève donc maintenant c’est carrément la galère de voyager dans ces conditions.

Nous avons trouvé une solution intermédiaire mais qui nous coûte encore de l’argent, celle d’être pré-acheminé à la frontière du Tibet en hélicoptère.

Nous partirons de Katmandou le 10 au matin, en espérant pouvoir faire nos courses de nourritures et achats divers car avec la grève la plupart des commerces sont fermés.

Nous attendrons le staff et les bagages trois jours à Nyalam situé à 3800 mètres d’altitude ce qui va nous permettre de commencer notre acclimatation.

En théorie, nous devrions atteindre le camp de base le 19 ou 20 avril et je vais le quitter le 23 afin d’être à Katmandou pour prendre mon avion le 28 avril…

Côté météo, il fait chaud mais pas trop, l’été a commencé et les orages aussi.

Nous avons hâte de quitté Katmandou pour entreprendre notre route vers le camp de base du Makalu et découvrir cette région sauvage du Tibet. Ce jeudi 8 avril, nous allons rencontrer le staff de notre expédition à l’agence et caler les derniers préparatifs.

Le 9 avril, nous bouclerons les bagages pour ce long voyage.
