Italians Everest assault at high camp, they are expected to attack the summit tonight: Italian Everest/K2 2004 expedition

Everest: K2 2004 mountaineers are now at high camp expected to attack the summit tonight.

Earlier news, the next dispatch coming soon...

Today six K2 2004 mountaineers reached  camp II (7800 m). Tomorrow they wil head for camp III followed by other expedition members who are reaching high camps.

"Mario Panzeri, Mario Merelli, Giampaolo Gioia, Karl Unterkircher, Claudio Bastrentaz e Alex Busca are now getting to camp II (7800 m). Weather conditions are good"

Vice expedition leader Soro Dorotei announced today at 9.30 (Italian time ) 1.30 pm (base camp time) that "Sergio Minoggio and Paolo Comune were not very well and have decided not to go any further high. At 7300 m they decided to go back to advanced base camp - Now there is a lot going on at the higher camps: groups of sherpa keep on coming and going  transporting oxygen bottles"

Also K2 2004 team has brought oxygen bottles for its mountaineers, particularly for those who will go to camp I or II to carry out scientific tests.

Some mountaineers have decided not to use oxygen at all, among them there is Mario Merelli, Mario Panzeri, Alex Busca, Sergio Minoggio and the three eldest members of  the team: Soro Dorotei, Silvio Mondinelli, Giulio Maggioni.

"It is since 1983 that I have decided to stop using oxygen  - comments Soro- If I find a small oxygen bottle, this time,  I will  uncork it once reached the summit!"

It is not sure though that weather conditions will permit to summit Everest this Monday.

Last updates also concern a group of Chilean mountaineers who summited Everest, first team to make it in 2004 and from the southern side.
