While the high winds are still too intense on the mountain,
and continue to impede the expedition from ascending to camp 3, the research
group part of the expedition, headed by Dr. Claudio Marconi, has concluded its
research activities related to the Tibetan population in the village of Shegar
at 4300 meters.
For approximately the past two weeks, a group of 18
physicians, researchers and technicians has been busy doing physical tests and
measurements on the local village population. These include measurements of
endurance/strength, echo-cardiograms and anthropometric measurements, by means
of various types of equipment brought up to the village by the research team
for the purpose of shedding additional light on the genetic adaptability of
the local populace to adapt to high altitude life.
Marconi and his
group, having completed their research, decided to make the trip up to base
camp to meet one on one with the climbers in order to wish them well. They
were warmly received by the team involved in a high altitude endeavor of their
own, showing their support and unison in this scientific/alpine expedition.
Hubert Moroder,
member of the Catores group, has also departed the mountain along with the
researchers. While he was not, in fact yet showing signs of true mountain
sickness, he had developed a troubling insomnia which was proving
debilitating. According to Soro Dorotei, expedition co-leader, in recent days
Hubert was becoming weaker and most recently had also developed bronchitis.
The situation was becoming worrisome to all of us so together with him we came
to the decision that it would be best if he returned to Italy with the
research team.
Soro’s attentions are still, of course, mainly focused on
the mountain and the alpine operations. “For today”, he tells us, “we are
staying put, since the winds have still not diminished sufficiently.
Tomorrow, however, those climbers already at ABC will commence their upward
ascent to the high camps
and
Hubert Moroder comes back to Italy with a group of
physiologists
Strong winds keep on slowing the ascent of K2 2004
mountaineers to Everest summit. In the meantime K2 2004 physiologists have
left the base camp to return to Italy. With them Hubert Moroder too, who left
base camp for acclimatization problems.
Wind is still blowing intensely, preventing expedition
members to set up camp 3. Research activities led by Dr Claudio Marconi on
Tibetan population in Shegar village (4300m asl) were carried out and
accomplished.
The group of researchers has the decided to join K2 2004 members at the base
camp where they were welcomed very warmly.
Hubert Moroder, member of Catores Sudtirol historic
mountaineering group was forced to leave the base camp definitively and went
away from base camp with researchers. He had problems to acclimatize and
showed the first symptoms of bronchitis. Most importantly he suffered from a
continuous insomnia which was slowly and dangerously weakening him.
Soro Dorotei's comments that: "Today we are not moving at all, as wind has not
stopped, but tomorrow, mountaineers who are at the advanced base camp should
start moving upwards".
