May 12, 2004: There is
currently a high wind blowing at the high camps, but the weather forecast
promises improvements and so the climbers of team K2 2004 have begun their
“migration” to the high camps in preparation of their first attempt at the
summit by week’s end.
“In the afternoon hours there
is still a good stiff breeze – explains Mario Panzeri who today finds himself
at base camp with Mario Merelli, Giampaolo Gioia, Karl Unterkircher and the
foursome from Valdosta – Tomorrow, however, we are promised an improvement
therefore we are going up to camp 1 and in the next several days, if all goes
well, we will continue the climb upwards.”
With the climbers now
transferring up to the higher camps, the entire control center of the
expedition will also move upwards. Massimo Cappon, official chronicler of the
expedition and Patrizia Broggi, our logistics and communications technician,
will settle, over the next several days, at ABC, transferring to 6400 meters
all of the instruments for forwarding news reports, pictures and video/film
coverage.
