11th of May 2004 – 8:00 p.m.
local time (4 p.m. Italian time)
As previously reported the
strong winds and threatening storm clouds of the past several days have
convinced the majority of climbers, including co-expedition leader Soro
Dorotei, Silvio Mondinelli, Michele Compagnoni, Giulio Maggioni and Marco
Confortola, our protagonists of the climb to 7700 meters, to return to base
camp.
Current weather predictions
indicate that the winds should be dying down considerably beginning on
Wednesday. Soro Dorotei has therefore proposed the following plan of attack –
The entire team will head back to ABC beginning tomorrow and the next day so
as to be optimally situated for a hoped for window of opportunity towards the
end of the week and a first attempt for the summit.
The Georadar has already
arrived at ABC and will be carried up to the higher camps by the expedition’s
Sherpas and the team climbers.
Meanwhile, at base camp, a
sunny, warm day has been conducive to rest, a worthwhile endeavor in light of
the plans for the upcoming days.
We had a courtesy call from
the local Tibetan official who maintains liaisons with the various expeditions
on the mountain. He travels on the high plateau on an endurance motorbike.
He departed happily from our camp with more souvenirs of the K2/2004
expedition sponsors
