 Mt
Everest 2004:
John Matthews
|
 |
 |
Every
expedition needs a clown and that role will likely be filled by John Matthews,
albeit not intentionally. Since Everest holds the gauntlet for “climbing
firsts” – the first person to ski it, the first person to do it free solo –
John is considering an attempt to be the first person to climb Everest using
only a grocery cart as his means of transport. This year’s expedition will
serve as a reconnaissance mission for that.
John is a long time Telluride,
Colorado resident who has been climbing for 5 years. Climbing is one thing
that he takes more seriously than anything, including himself.
Mount Everest is a place that
he holds in terrifying respect and the level of commitment required is
something he understands.
As a member of the Search and
Rescue Team and co-producer of the Telluride Technology Festival, John works
full time trying to do something other than a 9–5 job. For now, he will do
his best to be a worthy team member, with a sense of humor, and as strong as
he can be both mentally and physically.
John
Matthews is a member of
the
International
Mountain Guides team for 2004...
