Dispatch 4: 4/26/2004
Hi all, We
are now at advanced base camp ABC (6400mts) Life here is quite cool, we are in
our large base camp tent courteous of force ten tents, put up expertly
complete with flat platform by John Briggs and our sherpa Pemba Galsing though
John admits he went to lunch and when he came back it was almost done …!
All our
kit has now arrived by Yak and porters that can only be attributed to Dan
Mazur who has used his 20 years experience to good effect. Its tent city here
about 250 tents camped on top of the Rongbuk east glacier at the foot of the
North East Ridge of Mount Everest.
The
journey here from base camp is split over two days with an interim camp at
5700mts we camped on top of the glacier and drank the yellow snow……. There was
a lot of Yaks around.
We tried
to push on up to the North col yesterday but the weather and number of people
on the ropes proved hazardous so it was back to ABC for a day of rest. So the
plan now is to move up early tomorrow to the north col 7000mts (4.2miles) if
the weather allows.
Its been
snowing most afternoons with the temperature swinging between –19c recorded
last night in the tent to +32c in the day. John Briggs is again proving a
mountain goat as he has moved up to the col today with Pemba to set up an
oxygen dump and a camp.
We have
been quite lucky with altitude sickness so far with only mild headaches and
loss of appetite although the food doesn’t help! But we feel like we’ve been
run over by the lethargic bus …… twice
Today our
Sherpa’s held a high altitude puja ceremony, in the next few days they will be
climbing high on Everest establishing camps and ropes. We would like to take
this opportunity to express our sorrow to all the fellow climbers who have had
their trips cut short by illness, have a large steak for us in the Everest
steak house, oh and Deano we want that classic car mag back so don’t leave the
country!!!
Sarah
Hall, Garth has regained his fitness we are told and will be moving up the
mountain soon. That’s all for now take care Andrew and Ian.
