CAMP THREE IS NOW INSTALLED!
Andrés and the other climbers
in the team have finished installing Camp 3 at 7300 m on the Lhotse face on
April 20. Alejandro and Andrés spent the night there to reinforce their
acclimatization but the 5 other members of the expedition returned to Camp 2
to sleep. After their night at Camp 3, Alejandro and Andrés also came down to
Camp 2 to rest. There is still no fixed rope installed between Camps 3 and 4.
Work will begin tomorrow on
installing the fixed ropes between Camp 3 and 4. Team is in great shape. They
are on schedule for a 1st summit attempt on or about May 4th, 2004.
The winds have diminished and
climbing is easier now. Snow continues to fall daily. Mornings have been cold
but sunny. Clouds and snow come late in the afternoon. The abundance of snow
slows things down. Crevasses are covered and travel through the ice fall takes
longer. The ice continues to move and with the snow comes avalanches, over 3-4
per day. So far they have been distant but the sound is like a freight train
coming down the tracks!
Team is up on the mountain
this week. Expect to have them back in base camp by the weekend. Ian Dobson
