  Makalu Expedition 2004: Norwegian Sven Gangdal Dispatches


Update One: Sven's home in Tangen, Norway, some days ago. 13 blue barrels with all kind of equipment and food are now on their way to Kathmandu, Nepal. It took a lot of thinking and planning to make the most of the barrels capacity....

Update Two: The official start of the Makalu Expedition 2004

Update Three: We have arrived safely in Kathmandu. All of our luggage and cargo is here, and the custom officers treated us well.

Update Four: We are expecting to run into the Nepal Maoists (The Nepal Communist Party, founded in 1949)...

Update Five: We also ran into the Maoists. After some dealing, we now have a written contract...

Update Six: "...We arrived basecamp ABC 5700 6.april. Today, we have climbed the route up to camp 1, which will be fully finished by tomorrow. Today we had sun in the morning, and a snowfall in the evening. We are all by good health.

Update 8: From Makalu BC we have made progress on lower and upper ice fall on west face of Makalu.

Sven Gangdal and Dawa Chhiri Sherpa (A) reached the summit, 09.15 yesterday morning!

 

Update: Nepal has great trouble with the Maoists, a separatist-group claiming that their goal is to make a revolution, and overthrow the government of today.
