Today, at
9:30AM local time, Radek Jaros and Martin Koukal, members of a 3-man Czech
Craft Cho Oyu 2004 Expedition, reached the summit of Cho Oyu. They climbed
without bottled oxygen.
Martin Koukal may not be
known to the climbing community, but he is well known to cross-country skiing
fans as one of the best current freestyle skiers and the World Champion in 50k
freestyle from Italy (2003). This year, Martin had to skip most of the skiing
season due to an injury and a prolonged illness, but he is back in a great
shape. Cho Oyu was his first 8000er.
For Radek Jaros, Cho Oyu was
his fourth 8000+ summit (Mount Everest, 1998, Kangchenjunga, 2002, Broad Peak,
2003, Cho Oyu). He climbed all the mountains without supplemental oxygen or
high-altitude porters.
