 The
Dutch UIAGM mountain-guide Edward Bekker returns to Everest after 20 years.
|
 |
 |
In 1984 Edward was 22 years old and participated in the "Dutch Mount Everest
Expedition 1984". On his way to the summit, together with Bart Vos and Mariska
Mourik, he had to turn back at 8100 meters, due to his malfunctioning oxygen
set. Exactly 20 years later he left Kathmandu for Tibet on April 4th to climb
Mount Everest via the North col with an international team. The leader of the
team is Russell Brice from New Zealand. Russell has organized 14 expeditions
to Everest and he summitted twice via the Northcol himself.
The guides are Edward Bekker from Holland, Richard
Mansfield from England, Bill Crouse from the USA, Dean
Staples and Mark Whetu from New Zealand
The members of the team are from England, Japan, New Zealand, Australia,
South Africa, Germany, Norway, Austria and from Holland (Kiek Stam, who
climbed all over the world together with Edward).
From Kathmandu to Lhasa goes by plane. From Lhase to basecamp (5200 meter)
goes by 4wd car, via Shigatse en Tingri with stops for acclimatisation. The
plan is to arrive in Basecamp on April 10th. On April 17th Advanced Base Camp
(ABC) will be established. There will be 4 high camps above ABC .The team will
use additional oxygen. The summit attempt is from camp 4 on 8300 meter. The
team plans to climb the mountain until the end of May. Early June they will
abandon basecamp.
