It
was the end of September 2004 when I met Mr. Markus Mayer at Fairy Meadows
near Nanga Parbat base of Riakot face. Mr. Markus and some of his friends
successfully enjoyed some of their Paragliding flights around Nanga Parbat
region. Mr. Markus is
a well-known Para Glider; he started this sport in 1987 and holding 3 world
records to his name. i) Goal Flight ii) Free Distance iii) Altitude gain.
His passion took him to Mont
Blanc, Norway in winter at minus 20 degree, Brazil when the world cup was
happening, US Death Valley where he reached his personal highest flying
altitude at above 20000 ft, Australia, Namibia Desert, South Africa,
Egypt near the Pyramids, Nepal, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Israel over the
Golan Heights, Bali-Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and also took part in several
World Cup Competitions.

While talking to the author
Markus mentioned that it is a very challenging, life-threatening sport for
beginners in Karakoram, better the professional do this sport in Karakoram,
weather is very different and unusual strong conditions even for good pilots.
The brand of Paragliding he
uses called Ozone a very good English brand he recommends the Vulcan as a
perfect model for medium advanced pilots.
1997 first time in Pakistan
he flew from Nathiagali down into the Jehlum Valley. During his recent visit
to Pakistan he flew 4 days out of the 10days tour, over Karimabad, Hunza
Valley picture showing view of Golden Peak and Nagar Valley in background,
landing picture in Karimabad, and also he flew over the Fairy Meadows.
Note: Paragliding is a new
sport in Pakistan, and there are yet laws to be defining to deal with this
sport. Yet tourists are flying over Skardu Town, Hunza Valley, and Fairy
Meadows and in Hushe Valley freely the authorities stop some but yet the
pleasure of flying among the highest mountain range of the world is so great,
peoples are taking the risk.
