The
Andalucian climbers of Siete Cumbres Sports Club await for their return to
Patriot Hills and Punta Arenas, Chile, in two planes
The Siete Cumbres club climbers
Juan Antonio Huisa and Pedro López are back at base camp in the bottom of
Mount Vinson after having reached yesterday morning the 4,897 meters of
altitude of the roof of Antarctica, after talking to the president of Junta de
Andalucía, Manuel Chaves from the summit of the highest mountain of Ellsworth
mountain system. After having been on the summit for a little more than an
hour both climbers started their descent, not without avoiding a fall in the
difficult trail of camp 3 because of the numerous crevasses and altitude.
Huisa and López used three
and a half hours to return from the summit to camp 3, where they rehydrated
and rested for a while to recover their strength to later use another three
and a half hours to descend to camp 1. In other two and a half hours, without
much trouble, they reached base camp where they await for a plane that will
take them to Patriot Hills where they will have to wait for the weather to be
proper for a Hercules plane to land and to take them to Punta Arenas (Chile),
then start their trip to Santiago de Chile and then to Spain. Huisa and
López could be back in Sevilla by the 26th.
The Andalucian climbers,
members of the Siete Cumbres S. C. are sponsored by Consejería de Turismo,
Comercio y Deporte through Deporte Andaluz. With the conquest of Mount
Vinson, the climbers add their fourth summit after Kilimanjaro (Tanzania),
Elbrus (Russia) and Mount Kosciusko (Australia). Both will attempt in 2005 to
climb Aconcagua (Argentina) and McKinley (Alaska) and will end the project of
climbing the highest mountains of each continent with Everest (Nepal, Asia).
