K2 2004 - 50 years later

K2 south: second group
arrives in Payu
Update from the second group
of Italian expedition traveling to the south face base camp of K2. Our people
had to improvise and act as masons. A road that had been hit earlier on by
three landslides had to be freed and a small stone wall had to be rebuilt.
However the group has reached Askole in the darkness and then continued to
Payu.
On the road to Askole:
During our transfer from Skardu to Askole we had to face an
adventure with the road that had been hit by three close landslides. Approx. 5
meters have been completely destroyed which made passing impossible. After two
attempts using explosives for freeing the road Walter Nones has taken control
of the situation organized the “construction” of a stone wall to support the
road. Meanwhile I was busy with widening the road towards the mountainside
with the help of an ice axe. The result: our drivers passed, passengers were
of course left on ground to cross this critical area.
The whole
operation took approx. 6 hours and we reached Askole in dark. At Askole we
have visited the “Mazzoleni hospital” and have found the inside under
reconstruction.
The
following days have been dedicated to our trek to Payu where we have arrived
today. We have a lot of pictures and video footage documenting our
“adventure”…. Ciao, Nadia, Daniele, Walter
