K2 2004 - 50 years later
K2 North: Towards camp II –
7500 meters
Today is the third day spent
waiting at Camp I for the climbers on the Chinese side of the Mountain.
Tomorrow we plan to arrive at Camp II. The weather is expected to improve
considerably. The group spoke with expedition leader Agostino Da Polenza who
contacted them with the latest weather predictions and to consult with them
about the plans for the climb.
“The wind has really quieted
down”, confirms Fabio Agostinis, “tomorrow we plan to reach Camp II at 7500
meters and we will stock it for the climb.” At the end of the telephone/radio
communication, Agostino Da Polenza advised that “Three days in the tents
notwithstanding, the group remains in excellent spirits and their
determinations remains strong.”
At this point, the attack of
the summit can’t really take place before Friday the 13th of August.
“Generally, in the K2 sector,
the best weather period is usually in the month of July. This year, however,
we experienced a long period of unfavorable conditions and it seems now likely
that the more stable weather is occurring now, rather unexpectedly, in this
late period,” concludes DaPolenza
