K2 2004 - 50 years later

K2- South Installed Camp 1:
An intense day at base camp south on K2: Adriano Greco and Ugo Giacomelli
have placed the first tent at Camp 1. Shortly after their return to base
camp, a huge avalanche rolled across the glacier
Monday June 7 Base camp on
K2: We awaken to an overcast day and a few flakes of snow. The cook has a
terrible toothache and the camp Liason Officer has a headache.
We are all doing well,
however and are going forward with our program: Organization of the base
camp, but first and foremost, reaching camp 1, where, in the last couple of
days a real race for a tent spot has taken place. The other expeditions,
recently arrived, launched their high altitude porters directly for camp 1
while we sat and watched, for the moment: but that’s all right.
Today we can rejoice: we too
have brought a tent to camp 1 (6100 m.) and we cleared two small spaces. Now
we need to dig in the ice to plant the tents. Good job Adriano and Ugo!.
Meanwhile at base camp we
hooked up the incinerator and burned all the paper we had produced in the
first week at base camp.

Just as we returned to base a
huge avalanche crossed the path of the glacier. Amin said “You are very luky
men!” Ciao Mauri
