K2 2004 - 50 years later

K2 North - the Dare is still
open -
We still have two weeks time
to attempt the climb of the north side of K2 North Side. There is great
determination on the part of the group of Romano Benet, Nives Meroi and
Claudio Bastretaz. The group has received additional supplies which will given
them the opportunity to remain on the mountain for one last attempt at the
summit. What follows is Claudio Bastrentaz's latest update:
Today we had confirmation
that the "camels" with the extra supplies will arrive at Sughet, the last
oasis before the deviation of the valley that leads to the front of the
glacier.
The oasis is only two days'
walk from base camp. We should therefore have the additional supplies as early
as Aug. 4th.
This became necessary when we
decided to lengthen our stay until Aug. 15h, a date we had not planned on at
the time of our departure from home.
Food supplies are still
plentiful enough that we have not had to ration anything, but the additional
supplies will mean that we will not have to worry about short rations for the
entire trip, even on the return journey, and that is something that
definitely helps us keep the morale high.
