K2 2004 - 50 years later

K2 South: 100m to the summit!
12.30 Italian time: the summit is closer and closer: Silvio
Mondinelli, Karl Unterkicher and Michele Compagnoni precede their companions
and the compact Spanish group of about 1some dozens of meters.
12.30 Italian time
After having decided who were in condition to attempt the summit by mutual
consent, even before the sun rise our climbers Silvio Mondinelli, Ugo
Giacomelli, Karl Unterkircher, Walter Nones, Michele Compagnoni, together with
the 4 components of the “Al filo de lo imposible” spanish expedition
(Oiarzabal, Pasaban, Vallejo e Zabalza) accompanied by the Sherpa, headed to
the summit. It was a few minutes past 2.30 a.m. (local time).
Just in this moment we are receiving an update from the base camp “Apart from
the noisy wind – seeming to slow down – and the low temperature – mitigated by
the bright sun – the climb is proceeding according to the plans. Now Silvio
Mondinelli, Karl Unterkicher and Michele Compagnoni precede their companions
and the compact Spanish group of about some dozens of meters. By this time
they are over 8.550m!!”
