K2 2004 - 50 years later

K2-North; The abundant snows
of the past few days is still an obstacle.
Zeus, the mythical Greek god
who rules over all matters meteorological is being kind today with the
climbers on K2 north side. It is not enough, however, to settle the snow on
the risky mountainsides that lead to camp 1.
July 6, 2004 – Base Camp on
K2 North.
Finally we have sunshine!
Today, taking advantage of the good weather, is a good day of reorganization
and drying out at base camp. With Daniele I climbed up to the deposit camp to
see about transporting the kits further up the mountain. In the last section,
thanks to 30-40 cm. of new snow, we were obliged to retrace our steps and
recreate the trail.
It is this newly fallen snow,
which has not yet stabilized itself on the slopes that gives us the greatest
worry, especially if we consider the steep slopes that lead up to camp 1. We
absolutely need some good days with cold nights to settle the snow into
place. And so we wait.
