K2 2004 - 50 years later
K2 South: Tomorrow we climb
to Camp II
Base camp is currently in a
settling in phase with the recent welcome of new arrivals. In the meantime, a
group of climbers has gone to camp I where they will spend the night.
Tomorrow they plan to climb to camp II

Base Camp on K2 South: After
the last seemingly interminable transfer trip from Gore 2, the last group of
the K2 2004 team arrived yesterday at base camp.
Early this morning a
logistics and planning meeting began so as to optimize the campsite in view of
the increased population and the activation of the communications structure.
The good weather which
finally returned yesterday has allowed the climbers to undertake climbing
operations once again. Today Adriano Greco, Enrico Lazzeri, Ugo Giacomelli,
Paolo Comfortola, Stefano Zavka and Leandro Giannangelo have reopening the
trail in the high snow back to camp I (6100 m.).
Unfortunately, the snowstorms
have ruined the camp I tent setup. Our climbers had to work hard to dig out
the tents and salvage the salvageable, and then reconstruct the camp in a more
protected position.
The trek up the Spur allowed
the researchers in environmental studies to retrieve additional snow samples
for their research.
Five of the climbers who have
gone up to camp I will attempt to climb to 6700 meters tomorrow, attempting
the difficult climb over the “Bill Trail” where they will then set up camp II.
Meanwhile, Leandro Giannangeli and Stefano Zavka will return to base camp
