K2 2004 - 50 years later
K2 South – we are already
planning on camp II
The days at base camp K2 are
passing amidst the sounds of the recurring avalanches on the mountain.
Currently underway is the planning of the equipment set up for direct contact
communications during the climb from higher camps to base camp
This morning at 5 a.m.,
Adriano, Paolo, Ugo and Enrico departed for camp I with the objective of
finding a line of sight hookup for the purpose of on-line communications
between the higher camps (during the climb) and base camp, and therefore the
world. There will also be an inspection of the tent setup, seeing that the
good heart of the Italians is now playing host to other climbers from various
lands around the world.
Here at base camp, the days
are punctuated by the sounds of avalanches rolling down the mountain and rocks
which, being warmed by the pleasant temperatures, make their way down the
great Baltoro glacier. In the next several days, the climbers Giuliano,
Walter, Leandro, Massimo and Nadia are going up to camp l with additional
tents and supplies. The plan is to set up a third tent at camp l and to carry
the additional supplies and tents for set up of camp II.
