K2 2004 - 50 years later
K2 South: New sortie at camp
1 -
This morning at 5 a.m. a new
contingent of climbers departed for camp 1 (6100 m.) Objective: To bring up
fresh supplies of food and materials for repairing a damaged tent. The rest
of the group is at advanced base camp.
This morning at 5:00 a.m. a
group of climbers consisting of Nadia, Massimo, Walter, Leandro and Giuliano
departed for camp 1 (6100 m.) with food supplies and materials for repairing a
damaged tent. At this hour (4:15 p.m.) they are all at the advanced camp
where they will spend the night.
This morning Mauri left for
Islamabad, leaving the responsibilities of camp on the shoulders of Adraino.
For the remaining climbers, the morning was spent in paying a visit to the "K2
cemetery", a place which filled all of us with great emotion.
The afternoon was spent in
straightening out the camp in preparation for the arrival of the last group of
climbers and our expedition leader. Even today we had visitors at our camp:
from Mario Dibona, a participant of the squirrels currently at Broad Peak and
the curious figure of an italian/japanese journalist who comes from Honolulu
and who advised us that he is accredited through our expedition (it is up to
you to verify this..we will meanwhile seek out ulterior forms of
identification/clarification). This continuous stream of visitors to our camp
helps raise our morale and keeps us motivated to continue to do all we can to
maintain the high esteem of our peers and from others on the outside.
Ciao Danieli
