K2 2004 - 50 years later

K2 South: Camp Italy covered
in snow
The bad weather persists at
base camp on K2 South Side. For today, we had planned to climb up to camp 1,
but the weather does not seem to be cooperative.
Base Camp K2 – June 10, 2004:
It is time to concentrate on inside work at Camp Italy: with the pick axes we
break through the ice layers, we fill our barrels and dump them outside the
large tent. Given that all of the surrounding rocks and boulders are covered
in snow, it is not possible to complete the dry wall we had planned.
Meanwhile, we are sampling
some of the provisions in our “storehouse”: radicchio from Treviso, bresaola
(a type of northern Italian/Tyrolian smoked ham), Parma Ham/Prosciutto,
Parmigiano Reggiano…for now we are only missing the extra virgin olive oil,
but to compensate, we do have some good red wine.
23 Trekkers from the CAI
group have arrived and so we had a toast of good will in the Camp Italy main
tent: a very pleasant encounter. The Chinese and Japanese expeditions have
come to an agreement as to how best to prepare their higher camps. Today,
however, they have returned from the advanced camp, in the snow, we will see
how things go for them in the next few days.
