K2 South: a well earned rest
at base camp
After having pushed
themselves all the way up to camp 1 and having completed the construction and
layout of Camp Italy, the first group of the K2 South expedition, who departed
Italy on May 19th, gives itself a well-earned day of rest. Some practice the
art of high mountain dress while others build snowmen. Tomorrow we expect to
complete the set up of camp 1.
Wednesday, June 9, - Base
Camp – K2 South
We awoke to a sunny day, but
soon realized that it would be of short duration as heavy cloud cover was
closing in from Concordia.
The art of wasting time
reigns supreme in these days at base camp: After over 12 hours spent lying in
our tent in our sleeping bags, thinking of who knows what, we find ourselves
meeting over breakfast to plan somewhat useless occupations like how to cut
Coco’s hair given that yesterday, in learning how to use the battery charging
device, we were able to charge up Rico’s hair trimmer.
We need to master this art
otherwise we will end up overly nervous or overdoing too many things. So we
make time to build a snowman, while we try to figure out how to cure our
cook’s extremely painful toothache.
Today we were hoping for some
visitors from Concordia, and instead, nothing. So we sit and watch the crows
recycle our damp waste. We wait for the snow to melt while we move the usual
supply barrels back and forth.
We are also making plans for
tomorrow. If the weather holds, we hope to go up to camp 1 to lay it out
properly.
Tomorrow will tell, Ciao,
Mauri
