While everybody's attention was concentrated on Everest North Ridge, where
K2 2004 team was challenging the highest mountain in the World, K2 first
recon mission was already heading towards K2.
Expedition members Maurizio
Gallo, Adriano Greco, Paolo Confortola, Ugo Giacomelli and Enrico Lazzeri left
last May 19 to Pakistan to start operations for the setting up of K2 south
side base camp and co-ordinate all necessary operations connected to
eco-compatibility protocols.
As soon as the group arrived at Skardu they started organizing the transfer of
materials and equipment to base camp. Around 400 porters were hired for this
operation.
Groups of 100 porters will leave Skardu village at one day of distance between
each other, so as not to crowd Baltoro camps and keep all expedition materials
under control.
In the last few days, weather in Skardu was rainy. In Urdukas it is still
snowing (around 10 cm every day). As a consequence to bad weather conditions
at Concordia, the team decided to get to K2 base camp via Broad Peak base
camp.
