K-2, the second highest
mountain has been the focus of mountaineering and trekking community this year
due to its 50th summit celebrations. The Baltoro region was visited by a large
number of trekkers and porters. This may have resulted into degradation of the
area and the pollution on a large scale. Mountain Wilderness International in
collaboration with Mountain Wilderness Pakistan is sending two expert
alpinists/environmentalists from Pakistan to assess the damage caused by the
2004 visitors in the Baltoro Region. The two alpinists will leave Lahore for
Skardu in the last week of September to conduct the survey. The report will
help in assessing the damage already and now caused.
Mountain Wilderness Pakistan
In Pakistan, Mountain Wilderness Pakistan is active in
training the locals for mountain related activites and people from urban areas
who are interested purely for the sake of safeguarding the last wild places
left on the face of earth. The Mountains are the precious ones being less
spoiled.
We have been not only organizing courses for the Liaison
Officers that accompany with foreign expeditions, but to guides, porters and
even cooks hoping to achieve something in the mountains by educating locals to
a level that they can understand to behold their diversity.
