ANDALUCIA K2: EVERYBODY
AT BASE CAMP'Lolo'
González got the news of his father's death when he arrived to 'Casa Andalucía'
in B. C.
They have finished the
descent to 5,000 m. in the last hours.
The three climbers of
Andalucia K2 Expedition who attempted the summit arrived to Advanced Base Camp
(6,200 m) around noon, Spain time. A little above that mark 'Lolo' González,
Manuel Salazar and Manuel Morales met with Raimundo García del Moral and
Fernando Fernández-Vivancos who had left to search them from B. C., early in
the morning on the Pakistani Karakorum to help with the load of materials of
their teammates. In the last part of the descent, the chief of the expedition
'Lolo' González was carried in a gurney by his teammates to B. C., although he
is not hurt or has something to worry about.
Three hours later everybody
arrived to Base Camp, with problems of exhaustion and accumulated tension,
although nobody had any grave physical problem. The Andalucians could even
pick up a good part of the materials they had put in the different high
altitude camps on their second failed attempt to crown K2.
In the following hours, the
chief of the expedition at B. C., 'Lolo', got the news in a conversation via
satellite phone with his own family, that his father Manuel González Portilla,
responsible for the Tourism Office of San Pedro de Alcántara and a big
promoter of sport in San Pedro, died when he was at 8,000 meters of altitude,
attempting to crown K2 early in the morning of Thursday 29, and that his
funeral was going to take place in the afternoon.
The Andalucian expedition
will stay at B. C. at least until August 3, then they will start their return
by foot towards the towns of Askole and Hushé and from there they will take an
all terrain vehicle to Skardu, where they will dedicate one or two days to
organize materials. Days 9 and 10 will be used to go from Skardu to Chilas
and then to Islamabad by road. On the 11th they will make preparations for
the return in Islamabad. They will leave the Pakistani capital on Thursday 12
at 11:30 hours and they will arrive in Andalucia at 20:55 to Pablo Ruiz
Picasso airport in Malaga.
