Schreilechner Broad Peak and K2 Expedition 2004 update 2
Update 6/2/2004 Islamabad: Today was a rather busy day. In the morning I went
to the office of ATP (Adventure Tours Pakistan) to
check my luggage. It seems that everything has
arrived. Three more expedition members have arrived.
Rory Stark from Alaska, Fred from Norway and Chad
Kellogg from the USA. Parts of Rory┤s luggage have not
yet arrived. They are supposed to arrive in two days.
Shortly before midday I have been at the Ministry for
Tourism for briefing. In the afternoon I went to
Askari Aviation to arrange for a helicopter rescue if
it should proof necessary. Now I am back at the hotel,
but I will still go to the market to buy some
batteries. Tomorrow we will leave at 7.00 am. We have
to take the KKH Karakoram Highway because all flights
to Skardu have been cancelled due to bad weather. This
means two days of ride 14 hours per day on bad roads.
Update 6/3/2004 Chilas: We have got up at 6 in the morning
today, at 7 we left for Chilas. At 14.00 we had lunch break in PPP. After that
we drove on to Chilas with almost no break. Now it is 21.00 and we just
arrived at Shangri La hotel. We will be having dinner soon. The ride on the
KKH is an adventure for itself. A small mountain road high above the river
Indus. On one side the mountain rises steep for more than 1000m, on the other
you can see several hundred meters down on Indus river. Tomorrow we will very
likely have TO STAY HERE IN Chilas, because there is a big landslide blocking
several hundred meters of road ahead of us.
